ONLINE ENGINEERING DEGREES, SHOULD IT BE A REALITY?

ONLINE ENGINEERING DEGREES, SHOULD IT BE A REALITY?

Is it the right time and the best opportunity for introducing the 'ONLINE ENGINEERING DEGREE' programmes in the country? The advantages could be:

1.        Tremendous resource saving in terms of funding, land, infrastructure, energy, foreign exchange.

2.        Requirement of few hundred acres of land for each institution will vanish. Thus more land can be made available for modern farming and improved civic infrastructure.

3.        There won’t be any financial pressure on the parents for sustaining their wards in Hostels.

4.        Staying at home will allow healthy and hygienic food for the students all the time.

5.        Huge expenditure and pressure in hiring faculty will be eliminated.

6.        Examination could be ‘Online or OMR sheet’ based.

7.        Single University (National University) alone can manage all online admissions and testing process.

8.        Students can register for ‘mooc courses offered by nptel’.

9.        Anybody interested irrespective of age with minimum eligibility should be able to register for the particular course. This will do away with all entrance tests.

10.     Students thus will be able to register for a degree of choice since there can’t be any limit on the number of seats available in a particular programme.

11.     All the students will hence be covering exactly the same curriculum and examination. This will also help in providing honest National grading of students (Absolute Ranking).

12.     Pressure of opening more institutions and creating infrastructure won’t be there.

13.     There won’t be any peer pressure on the tender minds. This will be saving students from getting in to mental depression and frustrations.

14.     Funds saved could be utilized for creating better civic amenities and ‘Affirmative Action’ for the society.

15.     The greatest advantage could be the Vaporization of Coaching Institutes, thus saving young minds from the tremendous mental pressure which at times leads to committing suicide.

16.     Education won’t be a business anymore.

    1. It is only a natural logic. But in reality our most institutes are only producing paper degree holding engineers for quite sometime. Online degree is already synonymous to University degree.

  3. Sir
    What about the unemployment?
If there is open admission then students will opt for degrees if they aren't even capable enough to pass those degree exams and even if some pass their degree exams ,those won't be of much greater use and hence they will most probably remain unemployed. With already huge number of unemployed engineers in India, how do you suggest to cope with then upcoming unemployed engineers ❗

  4. Without practical knowledge, what kind of engineers will be produced.
Learning facts is not enginneering, Its all about skills.

  5. In addition to this l, some practical must be there which clean be handled by some of the govt institutions. There can be a virtual mode of the same and project work must be reviewed by govt. Institutions.

  6. Sir at present we have practical aspects to learn as per the course structure of Engineering but still a large number of degree holder engineers are unemployed. If we will finish these practical aspects too then those employed engineers will also sit at their home.Situation will become worse.

    1. We are living in a fool's paradise. Practical knowledge is only like window shopping in most Universities and Institutes.

  8. Sir actually the process of giving grades is corrupted. If authorities grade students with minimum marks which are required for eligibility of being called graduate, even if the student is not doing anything to achieve that respectful degree of engineering. So there is no use of that degree. And that is the solo reason of non-innovative thinking of engineers these days.

  10. Sir, really impressive idea you have given and all facts given here are true. And after this online degree students can do internship for 3 to 6 months in an industry. And I think they will get better knowledge instead of window shopping in the practical labs in institute. Nowadays institutes are doing formalities for practical, they don't have enough machines. If they have, they don't allow students to even touch them, operating them is a dream for students. Better idea you have given sir. We should work on it. Thanks alot for sharing.

  11. That's great sir, but, what about the 'Acceptance' of such programs/degrees for job purpose, especially in Indian context?? Most of the organizations asks for degrees on paper, particularly regular mode, not the knowledge part. What kind of policies can help getting rid of such mentality of the job-givers?? Please guide in this side.

  12. this is really a good idea we need to give serious thought on it and implement it it will have very big advantages in terms of the access and reduction of the cost and time

  13. Very valid points sir. I'd like to add one more here.

As practical knowledge (by practice) can't be learned sitting remotely. We can consider offering 1 year or 6 months of just practicals (obviously in parts) throughout the 4 years.

To lessen the burden on infra and resources, we can form batches and use the same setup for every other batch.
