Prof Sunil Pandey is a Welding Fabrication and Manufacturing Scientist & Consultant. He is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Formerly he was Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He is also the Former Vice Chancellor / Director of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (SLIET), Deemed University (CFTI under MHRD), Longowal, District Sangrur, Punjab. He is known for his contribution in the field of Welding Technology and manufacturing science. He has developed and established various cost effective and national need based technologies in the field of welding. He is an innovative researcher and just doesn’t believe in remaining a follower researcher. His commitment to self is:

  • If they can innovate (Western World) then why can’t we? 
  • He is proud of Vedic Science & Technology.
  • He has successfully developed a teaching methodology which is based on Brainstorming all the time. 
  • He believes in only producing an educated engineers and not the “Paper degree holding engineers” .
He is responsible for developing a World class Welding Research Laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He produces own consumables including underwater welding electrodes. This is the only Laboratory of it's kind. He is responsible for introducing the most flexible multi-entry and multi-exit technical education system in the country. It takes care of the student after class-X and one can then go up to the PhD level of education. Age is no bar. He takes pride in having introduced the most transparent & honest administrative system in the country. 

His unfulfilled desire is to create a combination of true World Class University and an extremely profitable business model. The name of the University or the Institute should become the symbol of quality and the benchmark for all other institutions including IITs. Early Life

Sunil Pandey was born in New Delhi, India. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal (Now NITK). He earned masters in Production Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Later awarded with a PhD in Welding Technology by IITD.


In his early days he had joined M/s Usha Telehoist Ltd as Engineer Trainee and later as Superintendent (Machine Shop) after his graduation. There he worked for nearly three years. He resigned and joined Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to satiate his desire to become an Innovative Researcher, Teacher and Freelance Industrial Consultant. He obtained the Post Graduate Degree in Production Engineering and later obtained the degree of PhD in Welding Technology in Nov., 1986. He joined Delhi Technological University as a Lecturer and later got selected through UPSC as Assistant Professor. He served DTU from 1987 to 1993. After that he joined Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1993 as assistant Professor later selected as Professor.
At IITD, Sunil Pandey established the World class Welding Laboratory. His interests include welding technologies, manufacturing processes and joining of materials. He has welding processes covered through patent, design registrations and copy rights to his credit. He worked for the Indo-UK project on " Commercialization of Plasma Enhanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding Process and development of application specific fluxes " for which he also visited Brunel University, London. He was the inventor of the technology.
At IITD, He developed covered electrodes for Underwater welding. Another ambitious project that he headed was " Optimizing Surfacing and Cladding Through Dilution Control Using Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding Process". The project was funded by Science and Engineering Research Council. He is the inventor of the process. He has also invented the "Advanced Submerged Arc Welding Process".
His administrative assignment started when Ministry of human resource & development appointed him as Director of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (SLIET), Deemed University (CFTI under MHRD), Longowal, District Sangrur, Punjab in 2011.

Role as Educationist

As Director of SLIET, he demolished the 7 year graduation structure of SLIET which took one extra year to complete graduation. It saves one year and degree & diploma awarded by SLIET became Standard. Before it ,due to unique academic system, Student of SLIET faced many challenges from employers because they did not recognise the degree awarded by SLIET.He did remarkable change in Entrance exam of SLIET in 2014. He stadardized the courses of SLIET & helped SLIET to join the the common test for engineering admission known as Joint Entrance Examination(JEE).He also changed the admission procedure of Post graduate programmes.


Prof. Sunil Pandey was working on making a synthetic weld at Welding laboratory of IIT Delhi with tubular electrode. He was trying to add alloying elements to the weld pool through the hollow tube. When he had made the bead. He examined it to know the penetration. When he cut it. He surprised to see the penetration. Penetration was deeper than simple SMAW. He repeated the experiments & found same results. The reason of deep penetration was unknown at that time. But he saw the scope of this invention & developed several welding & allied processes.
Deep Penetration is due to the horizontal component of pinch force.In case of tubular electrode, hollow tube contain gases only. When this horizontal pinch force acts on the tip of electrode then it produces an extra thrust on the droplet. For better understanding, we can take the analogy. When we press the tube of toothpaste , paste comes out. The velocity of paste depends on intensity of applied force. Same situation is here. This is known as plasma enhancing.
In PESMAW, There is an Universal Electrode Holder(UEH). That holds tubular electrodes. It has a supply of gas, Powder(Flux or alloying Elements). It is patented by Prof. Sunil Pandey.
Due to deep penetration, Plasma Enhanced Shielded metal arc welding can replace the use of cellulosic electrode. Because cellulosic electrode has a problem of hydrogen embrittlement. He worked for the Indo-Uk project on “Commercialization of Plasma Enhanced shielded metal arc welding process and development of application specific flux” for which he visited Brunel University, London. He used same principle for optimizing surfacing and cladding through dilution control. He is also known for flux formulation. He has guided & motivated people to work & develop technologies. He developed a modified underwater welding process at IIT, Delhi. He has more than twelve welding processes and hardware protected through design registrations,  copyrights and patent to his credit. He is the recipient of prestigious "Best Teacher Award" for his excellence in academic contribution.
