FALLING ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND DISCONTENTMENT

 Academic excellence in any University or Institute becomes the victim when purely academic and research related decisions are taken on the principles of “Gutbandhan Politics” or Unholy Alliance of technically incompetent & insensitive faculty in the system. Merit (academic) will continue to remain on the backburner.

 Students have started expressing their dissatisfaction. Most classrooms are devoid of Brainstorming. Mental health of many students is under serious threat. Increased number of depression cases and some isolated cases of suicides in the institutes of higher learning is proof enough of presence of Technically Incompetent & Insensitive Faculty in the system. Such Faculty members knowingly build-up mental and physical pressure on the students in trying to maintain a virtual image of an International Scientist. It is strange that this angle hasn’t been noticed or considered till date. The current situation must be taken as a wake-up call. 

 No amount of funding will help. It is time to treat the disease. It can be treated by fixing the accountability of all people in the chain responsible for hiring such Technically Incompetent & Insensitive Faculty.

 Strong Faculty hiring and assessment programme can help in hiring faculty with the desired temperament and identifying such Technically Incompetent & Insensitive Faculty. The academic must not be allowed to hire another academic. The steps in faculty assessment programme could be:

    I checked out departmental websites of almost all IITs. I wanted to know about research projects going on & topics of thesis in M.Tech & Ph.D.
    Unfortunately, barring a few instances, all I found was dummy-research. They keep churning out thesis that has zero industrial or scientific applications. I am not undermining the hard work our students put in their thesis, but what's the point of research if it ain't useful ?
    And regarding the faculty, I found that most of the IIT staff (barring a few dedicated ones) work like a regular 10 to 5 gov't employee with no consideration of whether they contribute to common good or not. They're only concerned with their 10 to 5 job.

      i think we should have suitable expectation...their should be a proper guideline for b.tech, m.tech, phd students about their projects...industry must give their inputs too...priorities for btech shud be to gain knwldg abt how industry works practically...mtech must churn out to solve the problems in industry...phd guys r the one who shud discover some new research...

      For learning i can say , there are only a few things that i have learned in classroom learning , rest all my credit goes to technology ( be it google , youtube , wikipedia etc ... ..) we don't have real motivation to attend classes as our classroom learning programs are way outdated. We find projectors installed in our classrooms ,and how many faculty members use them , as if they are just for presenting powerpoint presentations by students only. what i find and realise is that faculty members tends to pass time in class y following the ages old teaching methodology (i.e. writing on white board), i am a student doing my MTech in one of the countries most reputed institutes. a few days back we (me and a few of my friends) were discussing about the applicability of our work and how can it be raised to the level of industry standards, and more importantly to be of some use to somebody ( i.e. some industry ).

      In the discussion we happen to conclude that most effective and efficient way is to increase the number of industry sponsored projects. the industry pays and gets the work done, and provide some sort of job guarantee to the student if s/he performs well. In this way targets and deadlines will be well defined and the work is bound to happen. For student worrying about the job will no more be a problem and he can happily devote time and energy towards the research. IN this way the research and its outcome will make more sense.

    Your subject and teaching style, I found academic-industry oriented. Most of others I found a classroom teaching of spoonfeeding.

    Government funded institutions whether they are IITs, RRLs, DRDO, etc etc cannot be expected to deliver any innovative research. The research culture is missing in those places as the concerned are more interested in persuinp their own agenda. Except ISRO & Atomic Energy Department no other Indian government funded agency has be able to do any worthwhile work.
    In the private sector there has been some success especially in medicine, pharmacy, software, gems & jewellery etc where innovative work has been done although for profit. Indians must first understand that making profit from any innovative work is not a bad deed. The west has always made money from new inventions till the time the technology became common knowledge.
    Until India changes it's culture we will continue wasting public funds in trying to develop a LCA or rifle for 50 years with unending failures

      Blaming the LCA is not justified.The lack of govt. support led to the delay of the same.The engineers still managed to pull off the LCA and it has still survived the time trial.

      Government says "Skill development" and the institutes say "No way". I had proposed such industry and faculty interaction and the everybody unanimously shouted at me "Are you mad?". That is how we are producing virtual engineers.

    This is a sweeping generalisation! Yes, percentage of faculty in IIT those who work for 9 to five is around 20%. Some may go early, but will come in the evening and many times in Saturday’s and sundays to work in the department. Research can not be quantified by its immediate use,but there are faculty members who have been doing well to see their research is immediately useful. Unfortunately IITs are poor advertisers. As an ex-BOG member, I changed my views after visiting many departments and sitting for their presentations. But IITs could do much more than publishing research articles as there is a pool of good young researchers those are bright people who can make a difference to the society.

    I think one of the main problem is that we judge more on 'how good a person speaks?' , than 'what good does he speak of?' This is part of basic human nature. Hence, 'Objectivity' is completely missing. And most people just starts putting up a front while viewing the select group of people who are genuinely working as nothing but eccentrics or even as far as nuisances to their comfortable lifestyle.
